Cheap airbag rucksacks
Date Posted: 09.34hrs on Wed 21 Sep 16
Catastrophic failure of my now ancient Ortovox rucksack on the last day of my season in Glenshee earlier this year has forced me into buying a new rucksack. Admittedly I had planned on buying one earlier this year but found by the time I had saved the money in January everyone was out of stock, so this season I am getting in early.

In the end I went for the Pieps Tour Rider 24 Jetforce because the comfort of having no hassles over flights was way too seductive even if they cost more. However during my pre-purchase internet research I came across a couple of cheap Scott Alpride bags, one 20l and the other 30l for £320 and £340 respectively at the Ski Barn. The also didn't quite fit my needs with 20l being a bit small and 30l a bit big. Anyway might be of use to readers here.

See links below, the Ski Barn are also selling them at a slightly higher price on eBay so I assume the prices are real.

Hi Jabuzzard,

That skibarn stuff looks good very good. Thank you for the link.

20, 24, 30, 35, 40, 45 litres? Size doesn't matter does it?

You are welcome, they are by far the cheapest prices I have seen for air bag rucksacks. I guess they use disposable cartridges but that is quite a few refills to get to the price of a refillable or fan rucksack.

For me 20l is a bit tight with skins and shovel and bits+pieces for a short tour. On the other hand 30l is bigger than required, so the Pieps I have gone for at 24l is hopefully just the sweet spot for me at least.
