Attention All Walkers & Climbers! Snowpatch Monitoring (2007)
Date Posted: 20.29hrs on Fri 25 May 07
Hi all!

It's now coming into June 2007 and it is time to start turning comparing the snowpatch survivals against the last few years. I've a good record of photographs of Ben Nevis and Garbh Coire Mor from the last few years (at various times of the year).

However, it'd be really good if anyone was out walking this weekend could take a couple of photographs of indicative snowfields to let me compare them against my (growing) archive.

Pictures of Ben More (Crianlarich), Ben Lui, Ben Lawyers and Ben Wyvis at this time of year give an indication of how we are fairing in relative terms, though it's still a bit early for Nevis and Cairngorm ranges right now - though I'd still be grateful for north face Nevis and high Cairngorm photographs.

Thanks in advance to all you digi-camera carriers. winking smiley

Theres still some really big ones just off of glenshiel which surprised me. Mullach Fraoch-Choire had something that still looked pretty rideable in its NE corrie.

Of course in my wisdom I didnt think to take a photo but simply used it as ammo against my fellow walkers... but found one of A' Chralaig from the north showing some sizeable patches.

Also attached, what I think is Carn Eige from the south after some fresh snow on monday.

Oops, 1st attachment in next email (cant work out how to attach files in edit mode..)

Fresh dusting on the top of Glas Maol this afternoon and got sleeted on at 600m in strath Gairn. Big patch on Allt Sneachda/ Ben a Bhuird south top is still there but little vertical in it; you'd have to be desperate to hike up for that.

After skiing over the back of Cairngorm today we went back via the summit to see what snow remains on the plateau.

Mee reckons that 'over the back' at Aonach Mor has by a large margin the most amount of snow at the moment judging by what I saw yesterday as I drove form Fort william to Aviemore.

Yeah I seen that last night when i was at roy bridge. Summit gully looked complete pretty far down and the side of carn mhor dearg facing anoch mor still looked like it had lots of snow.

Is all the fresh snow we are getting actually improving the base, or does it just get washed away after it falls?

I drove past Spean Bridge a couple of weekends ago and was impressed by the amount of snow still visible on the Grey Corries and Aonach Mor/Beag.

Be interested to see how they look now if anyone's got a piccy?

Cheers,
