i think depending on where/what your doing either can be better, going faster on piste with big carves or annoying long flats boards cant really compete, its hard to look cool scooting along a flat while skiers glide by with ease. in deep powder boards are better, hands down! i agree they may not be ideal and a bit harder on the way up if your hiking but coming down kicking up a huge powder spray is unbeatable.
in regards to grumpy and the "i have a burton vapour so i am cool" argument, all that proves is you have more money than sense as there are better boards out there for less,
