Date Posted: 10.08hrs on Sun 24 Oct 04
Hi alan, i recieved an email from the winterhighland support team stating;
Dear user of winterhighland.com,
We have detected that your e-mail account was used to send a huge amount
of spam messages during this week.
Most likely your computer had been infected by a recent virus and now
runs a hidden proxy server.
Please follow our instructions in order to keep your computer safe.
Virtually yours,
The winterhighland.com support team.
OK it also had a zip file attached called winterhighland.com.zip
Can you confirm this is a legit email or is this some virus crap.
cheers
p.s if it is legit sorry for any spam ive sent

This is a virus, it has being doing the rounds for some time. It uses domain farming to grab .com email addresses, and the address given has nothing to do with where it orginated from.

I've had that one too - but here's a geeky question - how does it get round the junk mail filters on my hotmail account?
I have the filter on the highest level to keep out all that annoying enlarge your body parts/get a degree/borrow money/check out this porn site spams (which is another question - does anybody actually respond to these ? - Everyone seems to agree they're really annoying, so why do they keep getting sent out?)

If you recieve and accept email from winterrhighland, the spam filter will regardless of content probably decide it is a genuine email because of the address and/or domain.

Having looked into it. Some people have submitted their email address countless times, however I know my address is only there once and I recieved three copies yesterday. This appears to have occured because the server had problems and failed to complete the task, and restarted part way through, but some people have had more than one copy as a result.
I am looking at changing the way this works to send to your phorum registered email instead of using the mail list, as I recieved over 500 return emails, from out of office replies, the occasional could not be delivered email, and since the report was sent a large string of incoming virus attachements, from infected computers happy to get another email address to blitz!
I may pull the plug, on weekly reports and just do occasional alerts when things are very good, as email can cause an awful lot of headaches these days!

I never find the spam filters on hotmail accounts and the like very usefull. They sometimes don't block out the unwanted and block the wanted.
