Weardale Ski Club / Swinhope Pics
Date Posted: 18.27hrs on Mon 26 Jan 09
Some shots from Saturday at Swinhope. The report on the club's website said another 4-6" of snow had fallen over night and even more terrain had opened up on sunday. Depending on what the weather does next we seem to be on the verge of vintage weardale. Black Scar - the extremely short black was skied for the first time in years last Sunday (25th).

I just keeping my fingers crossed its going to just keep building. 2005 started off like this and stayed for around 3 weeks. The best conditions I've seen F2 in for years. Had hoped someone might have posted pics from sunday. If black scar was skiable then the gully might be coming into condition. A couple of very old pics in the photo section of the website show how great it can be it there. 700m of natural half pipe and rollers - oh hell yes.

Seems the pics didnt make it onto the newer site but can be found on the weardale pages of snowlion's ski resorts of northern england site. The solo skier is in the gully and the group is on the eastern end of Black Scar. The origninals used to be in the cafe by the campsite on the cairngorm approach road.

Latest batch now on Flickr, from Thurs. Only F1 running but given there was only two of the club's tow operators and they were also trying to fix F2. Thanks guys. Although they were only going to run until 14:00 everything eventually wound up at 15:30. The fell looks fantastic - just point and go.

Well, following Thursday's fun at Weardale and Friday's incredible conditions at Yad Moss, today had a hard act to follow. Even so, despite the light being a bit flat, and windyish conditions redistributing the snow making it a bit of a powder hunt, conditions were really good up on Weardale again today. Top tow running smoothly, but the main runs were a bit uneven/scoured especially at the top. However, with a little adventure there were great powder rollers, lips, cornices and a few short steeps to be found by traversing out wide either side of the top lift and using some imagination- plenty of fun. Loads of people on the hill today, though mainly confined to the lower slopes.

Fingers crossed that the season will continue as it has been the last couple of weeks or so...

Pictures from Friday 13th - morning after the night before and the great snow masacre in the Pennines. Featuring a run of the gully - which is what sets weardale appart.
