Skiing or snowboarding abroad 2010 / 2011

I am opening a new link for all your slides, rides, tours on snows outside the U.K. If you come over to the Alps, to the Portes du Soleil come and say hello and share some runs between France and Switzerland.

First ski-touring trip of the season, that was yesterday 11th November close to my place, on the Mont Chéry and Col de l'Ancrenaz area, at the foot of Roc d'Enfer. What an awesome first day of the season with fresh powder snow (20 cm on the lower ground and 40 cm on the higher ground). Some sunshine for the whole day and really not many people on the slopes. I had the whole mountain for myself.

Here is the link of the slideshow :

Thanks Helen, for your comment. I have never tried to tie my ankles together... maybe I should try that. I don't know but it's just the way I love to sign on powder snow. It's a great feeling to be slidind down in such awesome snow.

I've just booked a snowboarding holiday for the beginning of February in Avoriaz and I'm looking forward to it so much now!

Which part of Portes du soleil do you live in Lionel?

Bonjour !

I live very close to Morzine and Avoriaz, in the Morzine valley. I work everyday in Morzine. I live in the French part of the Portes du Soleil, just at the meeting point of the three main valleys (valley of Morzine, valley of Chatel, and valley of Bellevaux).

I hope you enjoy your stay in Avoriaz. If you need any information about Avoriaz and the Portes du Soleil, feel free to contact me.

Greetings from the Portes du Soleil,

Lionel

Have a look at the website of the valley d'Aulps ski resorts, that's the valley where I live.

I'm off to Avoriaz on Saturday. How are things looking after the rain over the past couple of days?

@ Andy28 : Hi Andy !

Please post plenty of stuff about Whistler. This thread is for everyone who enjoys skiing or boarding outsitde Great Britain ! It's always very good to hear from other parts of the world. I subscribed to the Whistler Facebook page because it's a place I plan to visit one day for a ski holiday. Andy it will be good to read and watch your reports. Have a good season in Whistler !

@ Bugmonkey : Bonjour !

We had a very bad period of thaw with heavy rains but luckily we are now back to cold temperatures. Minus 4°C tonight in my place at 900 metres. Last night there was a light snowfall. The Avoriaz ski resort website says : 30 cm of snow on the lowest runs and 60 cm on the highest runs. The temperature is now minus 9°C in Avoriaz. I don't know about the quality of the snow as I haven't been up there today, it might be a thin cover of new snow on a very hard base. The forecast for the coming days for Avoriaz is for cold, low temperartures (minus 11°C on Sunday) and sunshine.

On Sunday it's the official opening of the resort with the "Fête de la Glisse" !

After skiing in Edinburgh the new trend is for skiing in Paris ! Paris got about 20 cm of snow and some people enjoyed freestyle skiing in the Buttes Chaumont park.
The lift that they took was the Paris underground lines 2 and 7bis. They skied with a view on the Eiffel Tower covered in lights as it was at night.

You can watch their very nice pictures here :

DonaldM, I hope you have a great time in Les Gets/Praz de Lys.

I am just back from a great weekend in Haute Maurienne and this afternoon, for a nice change, I enjoyed a practice in XC skiing/skating in a fantastic place, the resort of Bessans (altitude 1750 metres, 133 km of XC runs) in the wonderful Parc de la Vanoise. The snow was quite hard but I really enjoyed being back on the skating planks.

A picture I found on the net to give you an idea of this fantastic place.

only managed 1 run on my lunchbreak today, didnt take the camera. snowed 1ft last night, but rained before lifts opened, very high avalanche risk so top of mountain, some massive avalanches were visable. hopefully more snow later this week.

At last the pictures of a great ski tour on November 27th on the slopes of Très le Mont in Haute Savoie ! Fog, powder snow, good company and awesome views. We really enjoyed the dram of Bowmore 16 years old before skiing down from Très le Mont back to Col du Feu.

cracking day today, peak chairr on whistler mountain opened after being shut recently due to avalanche activity, had a brilliant run down through powder all the way to creekside village, only met 5-6 other people the entire time

LOL ! Hipennine, not not using performance enhancers, it was just to keep a good taste in the mouth while sliding down in delicious powder snow.

You should try it if you haven't but I am sure you've already had that kind of experience.
