Mid Summer Slide
Date Posted: 11.11hrs on Tue 14 Jun 16
Just had a look at Glencoe -oh dear! The main run is now broken. I had planned on going, but is it worth it? Is there a larger patch of snow anywhere else?
Cheers, Mark

You can still get about 300m length of run in, which is more than you'll get indoors! Foreshortening on the webcam makes the patches look shorter than they are and you can probably still actually slide over the grass between a couple in the Main Basin!

It's always a good craic and the forecast is looking decent. There's a BBQ planned in the evening and the cafe is open late, so bring a tent or van and make a weekend of it.

yea, think I've done it 2 or 3 times now and it's a good day out. Usually we build a kicker or two and play about on those. Video from 2014 here: [www.youtube.com]

Godammit! Won't be much fun if that cuckoo and nightjar are taking it in shifts to keep everyone awake all night long! Coming over here, taking all the best perches ...

Forecast is looking good for Saturday for the summer slide - just as well we didn't opt for the Solstice itself on Monday though!

It was a great atmosphere at Glencoe on Saturday, with the Downhillers, 199 West Highland Way runners and their individual support crews, plus all those parascenders too. The skiers will probably have been up the hill at the time I came through in the hottest part of the day around 2pm, so unfortunately I didn't meet anyone. Still, no midgies in the car park a that time; that's a bonus at this time of year.

Were you running the WHW Hustler or support crew?

JC: kindof neither- I'm the organiser! Plus chief marshal, safety officer, race medic.... Runners are required to provide a motorised support crew of their own, minimum two persons, one of whom must be capable of accompanying the runner over the last 25 miles if needed.

It's quite a special weekend and this year we had the Adventure Show on board again, after a gap of a few years. Haven't got a proposed date for transmission yet but I think they're working roughly 3 months ahead.

Ah! Sorry Hustler, I should have remembered, you've been doing that for years, no? A friend of mine ran it in 2012 and I was one of his 2 main support crew, hard work that and no sleep for about 42 hours. He finished in 28 hours, about 8 longer than we were hoping for!

Would be good to see it on the Adventure Show, it's certainly a great event. Nice to think that folk were skiing a couple of thousand feet above as the race is in full flow. smiling smiley

Aye, it was a very special weekend; several pals completed their first attempts, so big smiles all round. Some stuff happened- oldest ever female finisher at 64 years. Oldest ever male and first at 70 +. 3rd, 4th & 5th fastest womens' times ever, with a close race between them. Keith Hughes ran a double- he'd started in Ft Bill 0100 Friday, ran to Milngavie, registered for the Race, ran back north again.. And still made it to the pub on Sunday night.

I've been on board with the race for 15 years now and have no intention to let anyone else do it for me! I love it... The Adventure Show will give us some advance warning of the transmission date.
Hopefully Andy at Glencoe made a stack of cash at the weekend to help justify the long opening hours for everyone there.

Hustler, All good it was a great weekend with lots of tourists, skiers, snowboarders, paragliders, bikers, tubers and all the athletes taking part in the WHW run. It's always a brilliant energy when there is so much going on. Andy
