It's fairly obvious, sunshine. Glenshee and Glencoe work their balls off and apply intelligence to their work. Both resorts are massively improved over recent years despite some dreadful winters.

Every time I've skied at Nevis or Caringorm, I've encountered a lack of uplift, a lack of snow making and a decaying infrastructure.

Both resorts, had a good starting point. It's hard to understand why Both are in such a tragic condition

New statement on CairnGorm website:

Text here incase the page is removed.

The temporary closure of the funicular railway is a frustrating situation for our customers and for the entire team at Cairngorm Mountain. Our parent company, Highlands and Islands Enterprise (HIE), their main contractor Balfour Beatty and project consultants continue to manage the current programme of snagging works. Cairngorm Mountain is responsible for the operation of the visitor site and we are doing our best to maintain operations with the other facilities that are within our control.

Due to ongoing technical difficulties coupled with the approach of the winter weather we have no definitive date yet for the railway re-opening. We have therefore made some operational changes for the winter season. This will ensure we can all enjoy the wide range of activities available at the resort as much as we can.

We are pleased to confirm that our winter season will open on Friday 22 December. The Snow Factory will be operational from the end of November, and this guarantees snow for the beginners’ zone for the opening date. If we also have some real snow by that time, the surface lifts will be operating, and the team will do its best to ensure we have snowsports for as many people as we can safely accommodate. At weekends, if there is no real snow, the tubing slides will be open for family-friendly tubing activities.

The Ptarmigan Building will remain closed until we have full snow coverage. Both the Cairngorm Café and Cas Bar will be open from the beginning of the winter season in the Day Lodge Building together with The Mountain Shop which is undergoing an exciting refurbishment. Once the season is underway our Ticket Office will be open every day in the Base Station together with ski hire in the Day Lodge as normal.

Regarding ticketing, we need to keep a check on capacity and numbers using the resort. This means that season pass numbers will be capped and priority will be given to previous season pass holders on a first come first served basis. As a gesture of goodwill our early bird pricing will remain in place all season and we will also offer a generous discount on our day passes until the funicular is back in service. We will announce the launch of season pass online applications within the next week together with our pricing structure of day passes. As always, parking will be free throughout the winter season in our refurbished main car park.

Whilst the team at Cairngorm is disappointed with this current situation, we will continue to do all we can to make Cairngorm Mountain the exciting and exhilarating destination it has always been. We aim to maximise opportunities for our winter visitors. We look forward to welcoming all our guests for another snowsports season with us.

That reads like the Funicular will not be in use any time soon. HIE continue to refer to the ''current programme of snagging works'' when it is abundantly clear that the problems are much much more than sorting out some snags....shame on them that they cannot come clean and be open, honest and transparent.....particularly given the fact that the costs have been publicly funded.
The drift away from CairnGorm will continue.

An article that appeared in the Herald / National over the weekend with the headline CAIRNGORM Mountain’s ill-fated funicular railway will not be open in time for this winter’s ski season, it has been confirmed.

Text reproduced below - as has some interest for all ski areas.

CAIRNGORM Mountain’s ill-fated funicular railway will not be open in time for this winter’s ski season, it has been confirmed.

However, rumours that the repair works will not be finished before spring have been dismissed by resort bosses.

A spokesperson for Highlands and Islands Enterprise, Cairngorm Mountain’s parent company, said it “certainly” would not be open in time for the start of the winter ski season as there were still “at least a couple of weeks’ work outstanding”, with weather conditions making this more challenging.

“If any there is any way we can get it up and running during the winter season then that is still our aim,” he said. “There are 94 piers on the structure that are being worked on and each has series of joints that has tensioning rods going through them and these rods are all being tightened.”

The controversial two-kilometre railway cost £19 million to build and has so far cost £25m to repair. First opened in 2001, the railway closed in October 2018 due to structural issues, reopened last January, then shut down again in August.
Operators Cairngorm Mountain said the team was “doing its best” to open the funicular as soon as possible.

“Even without the funicular, if there is sufficient snowfall, visitors can enjoy the choice of 12 other uplifts to access the higher slopes,” said a spokesperson.
“We also will reopen our two 100m ‘magic carpet’ conveyor belts. Since their launch last year, the magic carpets have been immensely popular and allow skiers and snowboarders to easily reach the beginner slopes.”

She added: “With the recent snowfall across the Cairngorms and along with our snow cannons and snow factory, which guarantees snow for the beginners’ zone, we look forward to opening our snowsports season on December 22.

“If the weather conditions remain promising and snow coverage and quality are optimal ahead of this date, we may be able to open earlier.”

As a “gesture of goodwill”, the resort’s early-bird pricing will remain in place all season and a “generous discount” will be offered on the day passes until the funicular is back in service.

Last season, Cairngorm Mountain was open for 104 days, welcoming 33,112 skiers with 16 stormbound days.

Elsewhere, Nevis Range is hoping for a better season than last year’s “disaster” when poor conditions meant the resort was open for skiing for only a handful of days.

“The temperatures were all over the place so it was really tough,” said managing director Chris O’Brien.

“The forecast is difficult to read for the moment but whatever happens we will certainly have our snow-making equipment and sledging available on Christmas week which was hugely popular last year – in Christmas week we had about 1500 sledgers.
“I like to think there will be a white Christmas because it looks like there is going to be a bit around that week and looking at the long-term forecast we are optimistic.”

As well as poor snow conditions, the resort has had to contend with sky-high energy prices which have rocketed 200% in the last two years. The cost of living and recruitment crises have also had a severe impact.

“That’s true across Scottish tourism where we have seen this incredible situation where turnover in most places in Scotland is up by about 15% but profitability is down by about 37%. What that data tells me is that costs are rising to an incredible extent,” said O’Brien.

Because skiing was so limited last year, Nevis Range is changing its season ticket products and is now selling books of five, 10 or 15 tickets which are valid for two years.

“We thought we had to find a way to make sure this season ticket represents value for money because of the challenging snow conditions we have had over the last few years,” said O’Brien.

Despite the poor ski season, the resort has welcomed 38,000 more visitors over the last year, with a total of 200,000 day-trippers and mountain-bikers.
A new hotel opened in April which has enjoyed 90% occupancy and a new cocktail bar and bike shop are also proving popular.

To drum up business, O’Brien has been at “pretty much every travel agent show” in the UK over the past 12 months, with most of the new custom resulting from that.
The resort also experienced its “biggest-ever” year for mountain biking and is looking forward to hosting the world championships again next year.

Despite the visitor growth, which brought a £1m increase in takings, O’Brien said the resort had experienced the same profitability issues as the rest of the tourist industry and would not break even.

“It’s not a bad loss, but in this day and age what does it tell you if you experience £1m in growth and don’t take a profit?” he asked. “Our costs are rising but you can’t put your own prices up if you still want people to come.”
Despite the poor skiing season at Nevis Range, nearby Glencoe experienced better conditions and was open for 37 days.

The resort opened on December 30 and enjoyed its “busiest ever” January, with a total of 12,169 skiers and 18,000 sledgers. A new three-person chair helped cope with demand and one day saw a record 1200 skiers.

For this season, the resort has invested nearly £100,000 in a new access system which will mean tickets, ski hire and ski lessons can all be booked online.
“We will have the most sophisticated booking system of any of the Scottish resorts as people will be able to walk straight on to the hill and not have to queue at the ticket office,” said managing director Andy Meldrum.

The forecast isn’t promising a white Christmas for Glencoe but the resort is already open for sledging with artificial snow.

Glenshee’s official opening is December 20 but ski patrol manager Jim Wood said the resort would open earlier if there was sufficient snow.

There were 106 skiing days at Glenshee last year, with an early December start, but this year it is hoped there will be a longer season and more continuity with the snow cover.

The Lecht currently has some snow cover but operators said it needs more to open.

Well it is now Saturday 27th January 2024.

That means a full 12 months has passed since the funicular temporarily reopened to the public on 26th January 2023 after 4 1/2 years of closure and a £26m 'strengthening' of the viaduct.

When the Funicular was pulled from service on a Friday afternoon before the biggest summer bank holiday weekend, it was routine snagging and tickets were on sale for a few days later on 1st September. That got pushed back a week at a time several times, when a month after the closure HIE said:

The funicular had been relaunched in January this year, following a two-year programme of works to strengthen the viaduct that supports the railway track. A 12-month snagging and inspection programme has been running since the relaunch.

Further HIE added:

The teams are working hard, seven days a week, to move the project along at pace and bring the funicular back safely into service at the earliest opportunity. Based on the experience we’ve gained since these works began a few weeks ago, we now believe mid-October is a realistic target date to work towards.

It is now five months since the funicular closed for the second time for public safety. The 12 month period is over. The funicular is still closed.

One has to wonder just how much of the £11million out of court settlement HIE agreed with various parties over the Funicular has already been spent on CML and the dysfunctional funicular.

So HIE can offer not even a rough guestimate of when the funicular will return to service!

Highlands and Islands Enterprise has said it still cannot provide even a rough date for the return of the Cairngorm mountain railway.

See: [www.strathspey-herald.co.uk] .

Even if it is not yet become a question of if rather than when, it is abundantly clear that the funicular does not have a long term credible future with the current viaduct structure.

HIE's entire master planning exercise for the future of CairnGorm was predicated on the statement "The funicular railway will be operational".

That completely prejudiced the master planning process and prevented a blank canvas approach. The funicular railway is NOT operational, the HIE masterplan can be put in the bin where it has always belonged.

It’s all gone very quiet and there hasn’t been any obvious signs of workmen on the funicular over the past 10 days. Holiday over half term, or stood down because HIEs fantasy of operating the funicular at Half Term was no more realistic than the one of operating it at Christmas?

Back when they were repairing the funicular (the first time around) I thought it was a sensible idea, possibly HIE did too, since removing the funicular and then installing alternative uplift would have really caused a massive mess and ecological disturbance on the mountain, but back then I was naive and didn't foresee that the problems would continue. Possibly HIE was too, possibly they had some other motive.

Now though I just wished they had ripped it out, re-used the concrete pillars for low level ground retention structures and then replaced the funicular with a 2-section gondola to the top of the Cas and a fixed grip jig-back funital (similar to ones in use at Val-Thorens and alpe d'huez) following the route of the M1 poma up to the Ptarmigan.

Now the whole thing is a right mess up, I can't possibly imagine how much money CGM lost this year due to there being no acsess up to the top bowl where there was good snow present for most of december, January and stretching into febuary.

Talk about shooting yourself in the foot.

Unfortunately, just as numerous of the objectors to the planning application for repair of the funicular pointed out, the work done prior to the January 2023 reopening means the removal costs and mess are now far greater than they would have been.

Perhaps that was always HIE's plan, knowing they couldn't get £50m in one go, get to this present stage and now make the case that taking out the funicular is now too difficult and would be environmentally devastating, thus the only course of action is for HIE to get another £26million to strip the piers of the concrete beams and replace with the steel as per original design.

Well that would equate to HIE having spent £53million plus to get us back the failed status quo of 2018, the middle would still not be in the middle, the funicular would still fall well short of theoretical capacity, it would still not be commercially viable, the tunnel entrance and track would still get covered in snow and put the train out of use when its needed the most!

This inexcusable waste of £26.5m of our money, which could have been transformational if used sensibly elsewhere within the Scottish snowsports industry, really should seal HIE's fate.

No timescale for reopening Cairngorm funicular

BBC News: [www.bbc.co.uk]

Dave Macleod, head of property and infrastructure, told BBC Scotland News: "We cannot give a timescale at the moment.

"It is a really challenging project.

"Every focus is on getting up and running as soon as possible, but it's a complex project."

He added: "We are talking as soon as possible. We are not talking years, but probably months rather than weeks."

Mr Macleod said the situation was disappointing and did mean continuing costs to HIE.

HIE have previously said that the work on the Funicular since latest August was part of a 12month period of routine snagging with no cost to the taxpayer. So did HIE lie, or was initial work carried out post August shutdown at contractors expense, but the work is now at HIE's (thus mostly our's) expense? If so since when?

The initial closure was for days, tickets were on sale for the reopening less than a full week after the rushed closure, this was then pushed back a week a time several times, before work would 'continue into October', then 'carry on into November'.

Did HIE not grasp the gravity of the situation? Did HIE have their head in the sand, or was the whole facade about reopening dates and having tickets on sale just a charade, more lies and deflection from HIE?

The BBC article frankly raises more questions than it contains answers. Reporting Scotland implied the Funicular will not run for the 2024/25 season either. Time for some journalists to get stuck in pull down the wall of sophistry HIE like to hide behind.

Who is looking forward to a winter of ball rolling on the hill, so much more inviting than some lift served skiing ! What a mess this hill has become.
