I wouldn't be 100% sure of all the west coast patches surviving just yet. Whilst the Cairngorms got a good covering of snow it was largely cosmetic in the west and it won’t take much mild weather to strip it all back. The Goose webcam at Nevis Range this morning shows just how little snow was actually on the ground and given that the snow fell on a Northerly wind it won’t have been the best direction to drift on to the snow patch sites. I would say Aonach Mor is still only 50/50 for survival.

I don’t take anything for granted! Though I agree that the snow is cosmetic where it lies on exposed hillside, the top of Aonach Mor has deep wreaths, and the cliffs look to have had a good covering. I think that the odds of Aonach Mor are more like 70/30 for.

Firefly, seems you were right. I think todays weather has secured the future of the west coast patches for this season, Aonach Mor made it by the skin of it's teeth smiling smiley

Now that the ski centres are gearing up for the new season, and trudging around the high mountains in autumn looking for dirty patches a few metres long are but a distant memory smiling smiley, I thought everyone might like to know the final tally for survivals this year.

Firstly, a huge round of thanks to all that contributed, particularly coaster, HTH, RJ (can someone drop me his email address?) Da kishman, snowpatch95, Mike W and all the others that helped. The amount of helpers, particularly in summer, made recording that much easier.

In total, 12 survivals:
1) Garbh Choire Mhor - Pinnacles
2) Garbh Choire Mhor - Sphinx
3) Garbh Choire Mhor - Michaelmas Fare
4) Garbh Uisge Beag #1
5) Garbh Uisge Beag #2
6) Garbh Uisge Beag #3
7) Aonach Beag (again, the largest by some distance)
8) Aonach Mor (protalus, not the higher ones that survived last year)
9) Ben Nevis - Point 5 Gully
10) Ben Nevis - Gardyloo Gully
11) Ben Nevis - Observatory Gully #1 (larger than last year by quite a way)
12) Ben Nevis - Observatory Gully #2

The lasting snows came approximately 2-weeks sooner in 2008 than in 2007, and a full report will (hopefully) appear in Weather magazine sometime in the new year.

winterhighland will be singled-out for special thanks, and I have plans next year to get more exposure... smiling smiley

Doubtless everyone's lost interest in this thread now that the new snow has arrived smiling smiley, but in case anyone would like to know, there's a nice shiny new page on Wikipedia dealing with Scotland's snow patches.

Enjoy! [en.wikipedia.org]

Congratulations Firefly !

You are a Scottish snow patch daft ! I hope it's not an insult.

Do you ski or board now that snow is back on the hills ?

Greetings from the Alps,

Lionel

Excellent Wiki page, well done Firefly, what would be good is if that page or another on the web included stats for surviving patched historically with some images! Lets put together an online resource!

Sounds good to me! I've got a lot of slides and photographs that were kindly loaned to me by Adam Watson and I'm in the process of scanning/uploading them onto my computer. I'll set up a proper online library when I've got everything in place.

The amount of work involved is large, so it's a winter project! Watch this space...

The easiest way to get "Weather" magazine is by joining the Royal Meteorological Society. The magazine is then sent to you as a matter of course. Membership costs £62: [www.shop.rmets.org]

If you don't fancy that then PDFs of individual papers can be downloaded. Last year's paper on snow-patches is here: [www3.interscience.wiley.com]

Aye, things have certainly been quiet on the snow patch front for the last wee while! Nice Wiki page! Look forward to the online photo library.
On the 'Weather' front (pardon the pun!), I was able to get a copy(photocopy) from the National Library in Auld Reekie, if that's any use to the more urban based readers of this thread!

p.s. can we have a translation of the French please Firefly?!

"Je ne skie pas"

... ???!?!? nope, does not compute !

(I don't ski because I'm too scared. I prefer to walk, it's safer).
