I'm reading about a Sudden Stratospheric Warming event which has allegedly happened which could mean properly cold weather 7-10 days time... Can someone with a better understanding of weather than me elaborate?

Is it too early to see what it might mean for our ski areas? If I understand the basic idea of weather coming from the East then perhaps Glenshee could be in for a treat?

today's model runs making it look a lot less likely now unfortunately. suggesting we will be sticking with a more typical atlantic flow (although not completely ruled out) Theweatheroutlook.com has a great forum and you can learn a lot from the threads on their.

How does it work in the Alps with these winter rated tyres when the police are enforcing chains etc? Do they let people through with that type of tyre or do they still insist on chains or socks too?

My experience in Switzerland is that it depends on the conditions. Most people will have winter tyres anyway. Chains are much better than winter tyres but you obviously only put them on when really required. The authorities there seem to use their discretion based on what is required at the time.

I would like to see something similar here but our weather varies so much regionally and from year to year I'd be surprised if it ever got any traction (see what I did there).

Met Office ramping in a press release... eye popping smiley

There is increasing confidence that the recent Sudden Stratospheric Warming above the North Pole could lead to prolonged cold conditions over the UK, increasing the risk of easterly wind and significant snow.

Glenshee seems to be in the firing line next week from the Beast of the East.

I think Glenshee, Lecht and Cairngorm could see significant snowfalls if the models verify. Looking like this will be a memorable spell of weather.

I agree - it's been a long time since we've had anything like this. The eastern centres will be rubbing their hands and hoping the councils can keep the roads clear.

So significant cold for 10-14 days, easterly winds bringing convective snow showers off the North Sea, the odd low pressure skimming past the south bringing more organised snow. Temps on the tops between hovering around -10 for the most part. The big unknown is really the snow totals but hopefully the easterly hills will squeeze the snow out and get a plastering in the same way Nevis/Glencoe does.

I think all the resorts did well from last weeks easterly. Even the West reported 70-100cm fresh over the week.
